I'd have said you've failed to experience the absolute depths of despair until you've realized the ineffectuality of your hatred. To be slightly facetious: If the nanobots really are going to crawl out of a lab and do the job thoroughly, what's the difference if you've managed to eliminate a few objects of your hatred along the way?
Anyway, hatred offers a distraction from your despair. That's the whole point of racism, for example: Hate other people so that you don't have to face up to your own self-loathing.
